The scenes of refugees stranded in France, Turkey and other parts of Europe has touched the many who have seen them, forcing the Government to change its hard faced stance of denying access and asylum to those seeking help.

CWU national executive member Steve Jones came across the suffering of migrants when he recently visited Turkey on holiday. Steve was staying close to Bodrum, where the body of three year old Aylan Al-Kurdi was recently lifted from the sea by a police officer.

Mufak and fellow Syrian refugee Mohammed both agreed that although they couldn't speak the language they wanted to get to Germany. Germany has commited to taking 800,000 refugees this year.

"For our part it is my view that the international trade union movement should pool its collective strength and formulate a strategy of working closely with NGOs and campaigning organisations to help refugees," said Steve.

"That's why we've agreed to drive much needed aid and supplies direct to Calais to the families that need our help with CWU Humanitarian Aid," he said.

"If you can help with anything, even just a few extra items on your weekly shop please get in touch with one of the CWUHA coordinators or contact us on Facebook

Carl concluded:

"This Government may be heartless when it comes to this crisis but the people of this country won't stand idly by and do nothing."
